You're right on all counts of course. I am not a relativist, but I acknowledge that there may be different interpretations of any novel. The problem is that Professor P's reading is actually a misreading which says more about him than about Richardson or women. I'm wondering if he read Clarissa, which seems (in retrospect) as a kind of corrective, designed to make sure that it can't be misread by people like Professor P.
