You see the inner / outer journey parallels in ancient epics, especially the Odyssey, the Iliad, the Aeneid, and the Divine Comedy.

* Odysseus learns the meaning of home and what's required for establishing stability.

* Achilles learns the meaning of compassion for the suffering of others.

* Aeneas learns neither of these things. The triumph of Aeneas over Turnus at the end of the story is a hollow victory, one of the greatest negative arcs of literature.

* Dante (the fictional protagonist of this pseudo-autobiography) learns what it means to be one with God, but his internal arc is learning how to transform his vision into a literary experience (i.e. how to write the Divine Comedy).
