You had me at "blues, rock, indie, alternative, electronica, jazz, folk, experimental." I'm listening to "Bring It On Now"--this is my kind of mix. Ben Ottewell's vocals are probably my least favorite component (I prefer Tom Waits for that style), but I can't say their songs would be better without his singing--probably not as good.
I agree wholeheartedly with you--music that doesn't fit a particular preconception tends to get ignored, no matter how good it is.
I'm not saying that "simple and conventional" music is inherently bad--there's room to experiment within a particular genre. But too often, "simple" ends up being "simplistic" and crowds out better, more authentic music.
