You covered what I was going to say, but better. I would add that the most vocal Democrats are not very good at respecting the views of people who are opposed to abortion on religious grounds.

Even though Democrats are largely the more inclusive of the two parties, they can appear to be the more close-minded.

Democrats could resolve this problem by the way they frame the issue (i.e. that pro-choice Democrats are truly pro-life and that ostensibly pro-life Republicans are pro-death), but they apparently seem to think it's beneath them to take the trouble to clarify a complex issue. It's a blind spot that may cost them votes from a variety of citizens.
