Wonderful to Udiscover Washington Phillips and the rest.
A few more inventions:
From Martin Molin (formerly Detektivbyran, currently Wintergatan), a series of inventions, including the Modulin (a kind of hand-held ondes martinot) and most famously the Marble Machine (this video is a kind of kludge — the original machine wouldn’t work for the duration of a song, and so Molin had to cobble together several takes; the new and successful machine should be available soon and will play drums as well; Wintergatan’s YouTube channel chronicles the long and laborious development of the MM). Just for fun, the entire Wintergatan in concert (mostly traditional instruments, including a manual typewriter).
Also on YouTube, Japanese composer Yasushi Yoshida has posted videos of his creation of a multi-voiced digital theremin, “LaVoixski.” Here he is covering Hendrix.
And for simplicity, there’s Ellen Fullman on the long strings, and Alvin Lucier on the long thin wire.
