When I was about 11 many decades ago, my class was required to attend a weekly Bible lesson (indoctrination session). (The Jewish kids--about 3 or 4 of them in my Deep South small town could opt out, which meant shamefully leaving the classroom, like some sort of pariah.) At any rate, these Bible classes were pretty boring, and one day I was picking on a friend sitting in front of me.

"Stop it!" he exclaimed.

This outburst got the attention of the teacher, who apparently had noticed what I was doing, and grabbed me by the hand, apparently intending some sort of punishment. At that point, I quoted the faux Bible verse, "Spare the rod and spoil the child," because I thought that it was a command to adults to avoid using corporal punishment, even if it meant spoiling the child. Obviously my Bible teacher didn't interpret the injunction this way. If anything, my suggestion confirmed her belief and/or made her angrier, and I got a whooping--the only one of my K-12 career.
