Well, it just ruined my day to find out that Clarence Thomas is even more of a threat to the country than I had thought.
In a general way, I understand the rationale for activism (whether conservative or liberal), and I understand the objections to activism. This is purely intuitive, but I don't think Thomas is an activist in the ordinary sense--someone who wants to bring about a positive change. It's as if he is fundamentally unhappy with the way the world is and wants to torch the place without any plan or desire to rebuild, as stubbornly truculent as a teenager and as self-righteous as a televangelist. If Justice Thomas has a vision for our nation that's constructive in any direction, I haven't seen the evidence.
