Two recommendations:
- “Where Did My Spring Go?” by the Kinks. It’s about looking back at a lost past and it’s so bleak you’ll probably feel better after hearing it (or you’ll feel even worse, and then you can feel good knowing you’ll never have to listen to it again).
- If you want to try something new, I recommend Swede pop (or Swede indie pop). Most of the music you mention is direct, confessional, heart-on-the-sleeve stuff. Great musicians, but I can see how it might be difficult to return to. Swede pop is as intelligent as music gets, but it tends to be a bit distant, ironic, dark-while-it’s-being-light.Two excellent musicians to start with are Hello Saferide (who’s really just Annika Norlin) and Jens Lekman (and they’ve collaborated on a project called Correspondence, but it’s best to start separately). “Last Bitter Song” and “Maple Leaves” are respectable introductions; both songs about looking back with regret, but they’re also wry and self-deprecating, without being maudlin. Then you can easily branch out. There’s probably more variety in Swede pop than in any other genre / nationality.
