This challenge / popularity ranking helps explain why I didn't care for the 80's.
Beat It and Footloose: I had to give them a higher score than Huey, but pretty much meh to my taste: 70
Huey Lewis: My Croatian mother often quoted a vernacular proverb, which she translated as "Your face is so pretty I want to wipe my ass with it." 'Nuff said. -50
Bobby Jean: good stuff. 90
Purple Rain: I shouldn't like it, but I can't help myself: 92
I did a deep dive in my favorites for 1984, and this freaking masterpiece is the result: it's timeless (way better than "Boys of Summer"), a unique combination of nostalgia and anger, depicting the tragic power of the past over the present ("Now I'm standing in the doorway with water in my shoes").
