These are great points (especially the sixth).
I think a lot of writers equate “big” with physical size (e.g. a story about an evil mastermind taking over the world). The everyday conflicts of an individual’s life can be enormous to that individual, and an audience can identify with the depth and resonance. But other writers assume mistakenly that the inner conflicts of a character are all that matters; these inner conflicts have to be expressed externally (e.g. Sideways or About Schmidt).
