There's music you immerse yourself in, and music you stand back from and appreciate. Most of our most personal music tends to be from our youth (our teens and 20's), but we can connect with music from our past or later. I danced to REM playing "For Your Love" by the Yardbirds in Athens, and I talked with Peter Buck about albums at Chapter 3 in Athens, but they are still music from a distance for me. I find Swede Indie Pop more involving (even though I'm not Swedish or from their generation). The influence is personal but not irrational. I believe that there's something in our core that responds to certain musicians / songs, or appreciates it from the sidelines.
