There's a very simple heuristic:

What is the harm in believing ABC about allegation XYZ, and what is the harm in refusing to believe ABC? Obviously there's a middle ground of "wait-and-see" but honestly, how many of us ever refrain from some sort of non-judgment.

I'm with you on your initial response. We still (as of this writing) don't know everything, but that doesn't mean that your (and my, for that matter) response was deleterious.
