The Little Sister is the best Chandler--it's his take on Hollywood, and it's vicious. The final sentence in my view is one of the best of any novel.

But you should also read all of Ross McDonald's Archer novels. They are simultaneously painful and enlightening. He perfected Chandler's California microcosmic vision of America with a tragic sensibility (McDonald was Canadian by birth and a correspondent with Eudora Welty).
