The defining "ethos" of the anti CRT laws is that public schools should not teach anything that would make particular students feel bad about their identity. Which is code for "don't make white kids feel some sort of negative emotion or responsibility for the horrors of slavery." In other words, "don't present slavery in negative terms." And we've seen the same kind of distorting principle as a justification for repressing the teaching of the Holocaust (under the guise of "don't teach just one side").
But these censoring, self-serving fools are ignoring the harm that NOT teaching the truth of history does to both the descendants of the victims and the descendants of the victimizers.
If Spiegelman had "judiciously" cropped the photo of his mother's suicide (which makes me nauseous just to write), the censors would probably have found some other pretext to ban the graphic novel.
