The companion character is often the audience's entryway into the protagonist. The companion is often more limited (e.g. Watson, Hastings, Archie Goodwin), so that the audience can feel more at home by identifying with the companion. The protagonist is who we want to be like, the companion is who we are, the antagonist / villain is who we don't want to admit we are.
