Songs for Insomniacs 97: Claude Thornhill, “Summer Is Gone”
Celebrating the conclusion of the Riff Summer Challenge wonderfully curated by Jessica Lee McMillan.
Claude Thornhill was a transitional figure between the “sweet” sound of 1940’s big bands and West Coast cool jazz of the 1950’s, thanks largely to the orchestration of Gil Evans, who would go on to arrange some of Miles Davis’ greatest songs. Smooth and hip — just like the Riff Challenge submissions.
