Songs for Insomniacs 49: William Basinski, “Disintegration Loops 1.1”

The story of “Disintegration Loops” is as fascinating as the profoundly moving music. William Basinski, who “composed” via tape loops, noticed that as he played an old loop, magnetic particles fell off the tape, altering the music with each cycle. As Basinski finished digitizing the disintegration in Brooklyn, on 9/11/2001, he witnessed and filmed “the aftermath of the World Trade Center’s collapse. He dedicated the music to the victims of the attacks.” (Wikipedia). The music has won many awards, including Pitchfork’s Best Album of 2004. Track 1.1:
