Songs for Insomniacs 33: Jonathan Richman with the Modern Lovers, “Angels Watching Over Me”

A move toward the light —as Jonathan Richman himself did after the brilliant Modern Lovers debut album:

… one of the most startling proto-punk records — it strips rock & roll to its core …. More importantly, the music is just as raw and exciting now as when it was recorded in 1973…. (AllMusic)

Although Richman’s later albums are brighter and more whimsical than the first ML album, they are no less startling in their freshness and directness.
