Songs for Insomniacs 32: Georges Delerue, “Merry Go Round” from the soundtrack of “Something Wicked This Way Comes”

One more dive into the darkness: In his film scores, Georges Delerue seeks to provide moods rather than catchy theme songs (like, say, a John Williams). For the 1982 movie based on Ray Bradbury’s novel “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” about a sinister carnival, Delerue’s nightmarish pipe organ / calliope song reminds us that the awe and wonder we feel as children is inextricably linked to our deepest fears. But (as is typical with Delerue’s compositions) the chief emotion is neither fear nor joy but melancholy.
