Songs for Insomniacs 27: Grinder’s Switch, “Seven Sleepers’ Den”
There are two bands with similar names: Grinderswitch is a Georgia southern rock band in the tradition of the Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band. Grinder’s Switch is a band fronted by Garland Jeffreys, who would later carve out a solo career influenced by reggae musicians, Lou Reed, and a series of other innovators. His band provided the backing (with steel guitar) for John Cale’s first solo album “Vintage Violence.” The highlight of Grinder’s Switch, IMO, is the final track, based on the myth of the Seven Sleepers’ Den. It’s relaxed and wistful, and creates a nostalgic mood rarely achieved by any of Jeffreys’ predecessors or his solo works.
Bonus: John Cale + Grinder’s Switch, “Please.” Beautiful steel guitar.
