Songs for Insomniacs 22: “Magdalen (My Regal Zonophone)” by Jennifer Warnes
Jennifer’s 1972 self-titled album (before she began using the surname “Warnes”) consists of covers — like this one from Procol Harum’s “Shine On Brightly” — and one original composition, but her singing is so strong and so personal that they’re all Jennifer songs. John Cale brilliantly arranged and produced (and contributed “Empty Bottles”). Difficult to find on streaming or domestic CD’s, but available as individual songs on YouTube, and the vinyl is a bargain on Discogs, considering the quality of the material.
