Songs for Insomniacs 19: Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, Connie Smith
A triple play for tonight.
Dolly Parton once said something like “There are only three female vocalists: Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, and Connie Smith. The rest of us are just pretending.” Everyone’s probably familiar with the first two; unfortunately not many people outside of country music old-timers know Conny Smith. Her bold, emotional delivery — dramatic but not overwrought — stands out among vocalists of any genre.
Barbra Streisand, “Cry Me a River”
Linda Ronstadt, “Someone to Watch Over Me”
Connie Smith, “Burning a Hole in My Mind”
With the great Nashville sessions pianist Hargus “Pig” Robbins.
