Songs for Insomniacs 13: “Hymn” by Kevin Ayers
A return to pondering the imponderables, this time by former Soft Machine bassist Kevin Ayers, who asks us why we spend our lives asleep. Ironically (or not), Ayers’s next album chronicles the sinister Dr. Dream:
I take life
My knife
Cuts deep
Brings sleep
Watch out for doctor dream.
But “Hymn” is reassuring in its own melancholy way (and suitable for insomniacs).
