Some people who study discrimination distinguish between voluntary and involuntary minorities. Involuntary minorities were forced to become Americans; voluntary minorities chose to do so. Obviously if your ancestors chose to come to America (like my mother's Croatian parents or my father's Irish great grandparents), you have a different experience than if your ancestors were impounded and faced continuing legal strictures after their "liberation.' Certainly all non-white Anglo Saxon citizens face discrimination and prejudice to some extent every day, but the histories and consequences of discrimination are not equal.
