Some of the southern generals were committed to their men’s welfare and we’re brilliant strategists. Still, they fought for the wrong side and don’t need to be commemorated for that (and some like Joseph Johnston didn’t want to be). Others were bloodthirsty and racist (Nathan Bedford Forrest for example).

We need a whole lot more historical awareness and a lot fewer statues.
