Probably my favorite year in music. There have been plenty of great songs since then, but this is when I grew up musically (so it seems as if the music grew up too). Musicians turned inward (following the lead of “Pet Sounds” and “Face to Face” and “Eight Miles High” the year before), and not just because of psychedelics (“The Rain, the Park” and “Pretty Ballerina” are about dreams, not drugs). Albums created entire worlds (“Their Satanic Majesties Request,” “Something Else by the Kinks ”—even more so “Village Green Preservation Society” and “A Saucerful of Secrets” the next year).
Btw, there’s a YouTube performance of “Daydream Believer” by John Stewart as an old man. It’s devastating.
Thank you for celebrating this amazing year.
