Paine was as anti theocracy as one can be. Conservatives love to claim the founders were Christian when most were deists. Paine hated all religions — Christianity, Judaism, Islam.

FYI, though Reagan’s economic hero Milton Friedman was pro free market (as Kesh Anand points out below), he also argued in “Neoliberalism and Its Prospects” that government should subsidize the poor (but not the rich). Reagan apparently napped through that passage.
