On all counts (not just music), the closer the remake of Vertigo is to the original, the worse it will seem. The farther the remake is from the original, the worse it will seem. There are a few other movies that would be a fool's errand to re-do as well--it's not necessarily that they've achieved some kind of superhuman perfection, but that they do what they set out to do do so well that there's no point in re-inventing them, no wiggle room so to speak. I'd say the same for two of my favorites--Rules of the Game and Touch of Evil (thought it MIGHT be possible to remake Grand Illusion, and the modern version of Boudu Saved from Drowning wasn't shameful),. This has nothing to do with when the original was made or how old or venerated it is. Even some excellent modern films like Raging Bull or The Big Lebowski or Groundhog Day would be unremakable, in my opinion.
