"Nothing Lasts Forever," Ray Davies' meditation on the transitory nature of life ("nations crumble and empires fall"), is actually a dialogue between two characters in his Preservation cycle--the woman who believes everything will perish and the man who believes in the permanence of his love for her, even after their relationship ends.
In the pandemic era, we're seeing that a lot of institutions that we thought would last a while (if not be permanent) can dissolve in a flash.
