Normally if I dislike a band or artist I dislike everything they do. So this is a rare exception for me.
I think one of the worst bands of all time is the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. But for a brief time, Welk used the brilliant Charles Albertine as an arranger. Here's Welk's version of the Sergio Mendes hit "Mas que nada": https://youtu.be/PAcHkSvXRxQ
The piano and sax are lively (rather than lethargic, as is usually the case with Welk arrangements) and Albertine sets up some complex rhythms in the horns (as he had done with Les and Larry Elgart). It's still close to the middle of the road, thanks to the schmaltzy chorus, but it's not DOA like most Welk performances. If you didn't know who recorded it, you probably wouldn't suspect Welk and his usually flaccid orchestra.
