No disagreement about today's pop. As a 60's Boomer, it's easy for me to kvetch about how popular music has lost its soul, but trite, facile songs have always done well at the "record store." I think the problem isn't so much the performers as it is the distribution / promotion process. The music industry promotes dreck just as the cigarette industry makes their product addictive or the food industry makes non-nourishing junk food seem tasty.
If you haven't discovered it yet, try Swedish indie pop. It's innovative, smart, and aesthetically superb. It reminds me of the pop of my youth. Your mileage may vary, but here's an example: or two:
