Nice piece about the composer, the soundtrack, and the film. I didn't catch the movie until about 20 years later, but enjoyed it thoroughly (for what you so accurately call its absurdity--Woody Allen is probably my favorite Bond). Bacharach's all right in my book.
In exploring some of the space age pop arrangers, I came across Johnny Keating and his soundtrack for the 1966 film Hotel (the kind of movie I would never have seen at the time or later). The arrangement is pretty cool, and the entire soundtrack is probably available on streaming. Here's a sample, which showcases a fairly unusual variety of instruments and styles: https://youtu.be/PsxC4BNHi4M
