Medium has become my replacement for Facebook. (Facebook was my replacement for another social media site that perished.) On FB, I posted a lot, made new friends, made enemies--but all of it was pointless. Pointless communication is (I believe) the ethos of Facebook, and Mark Zuckerberg has discovered how to make money by leveraging FB's pointlessness and selling everyone's privacy.
Medium is like a hybrid of Facebook and Etsy. You are marketing yourself to an audience, even if your primary goal is not to make money.
I'm still figuring it out. The folks who run Medium are still figuring it out. But the potential for real communication is still there. And so is the option of making a little cash from doing so.
