I've only got the free version (I had the paid version for a while). I've never liked their interface / set-up for playing music. It's part UI (for me at least) and part what you describe as the Matthew Effect and in related criticisms. Spotify doesn't encourage discovery of new music; it promotes sheeple listening. And financially it rewards sheeple artists like Justin Beiber (and sheeple podcasts) rather than truly innovative musicians / thinkers.
Since I'm not paying them anything, and since maybe I cost them a few pennies per decade, I'm staying on. But I plan to write about the Joe Rogan Experience as an experience and Ek's defense (as a defense). I'm not, however, ever embedding a Spotify album on my various articles on Medium.
