I’ve never laughed so hard at a tv comedy as at Frank’s Place (1987). They didn’t use a laugh track, but rather than force-feeding the audience jokes at a quicker pace, the writers slowed down the development. Lots of understated gentle humor and then WHAM! when the big funny moments hit, you were seized by a rapturous joy. A laugh track would have destroyed that.
