I've always thought that Netflix is to original content what pornography is to romantic comedies. I usually feel a little guilty liking their productions.
The problem I think isn't the medium of streaming itself, but that Netflix is always trying to take the short-cut.
Currently in the US, PBS (BBC) is wrapping up Endeavour, and Acorn (BBC) is bringing Happy Valley to a conclusion. Both are thoughtful series that rival the best of broadcast television--they take their time to develop character-based stories that grow more complex and intriguing with each episode (thanks to writers / creators Russell Lewis and Sally Wainwright).
The AMPTP has always seen streaming as a way to profitize production by eliminating residual payments to writers. It's no surprise that Netflix and the big prodcos are sleeping in the same meretricious bed.
