It's a rare treat to discover a 60's artist. On my first listening to the song Sunday Morning, the Spanky and Our Gang cover (with its bright pop polish) interfered with my appreciation of what Guryan was doing--a smokier, darker jazz feeling. Then I read the AllMusic bio--jeepers, what a background:
The summer after she graduated from college, Guryan spent three weeks at the Lenox School of Jazz in Massachusetts, where Ornette Coleman and Gary McFarland were fellow students and the teaching staff included Bill Evans, John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Jim Hall, Max Roach, and Gunther Schuller. Lewis and Schuller signed her to MJQ Music once the session was completed and gave her the assignment of turning Coleman's "Lonely Woman" into a vocal version.
First listening score: 85
Second listening (influenced by what I read): 92
I didn't know the band Sunday Morning either--that's my favorite style of female vocal, and the band, to their credit, doesn't get in the way (which is probably harder than it seems).
Score: 96
Thank you for this great new-to-me music.
