It's a master class in emotional manipulation (which is not a bad thing, in my view). At the heart isn't the schlocky patriotism, but the belief that one can change (the Randy Quaid character), even to the point of sacrificing one's life (the famous Hollywood positive character arc).
I'm afraid that vision is more outdated than the "heroic president" trope. In the Trump / Qanon era, I've given up on the ability of deluded people to relinquish their comfortable delusions.
