Initial reactions and final scores:
XTC: I'm not a musician, but I would think it's quite difficult to craft a song that works well without using fakery or folderol. This one didn't have the big hooks, but its smoothness was the charm. 92
Thompson Twins
The only group here for whom I've owned and listened to an entire album. I found this track disappointingly not ethereal. 88
Green Day
I'm old enough to have missed Green Day but young enough to be aware that some listeners consider them wannabe or wannabe punk. I thought this track seemed genuine enough but not stellar compared to my earlier punk faves. 85
Faith No More
Of all the bands here, this is the one I keep saying I should learn more about. My initial impression: if I listened to this track many times I would appreciate its complexity much more than from a single listen.90
Battle Beast
I love most Scandinavian pop but not the death / black metal so much, and this is no exception. If I liked the genre, I'd probably like the group. 75
Jarimoquai
Another artist I feel I should know better (based on reviews and social media) but this one didn't engage me on first listen 79
Planet P Project
My prog taste tends toward 70's non-pop, but this group did fit in well with your category. I appreciated the tunesmithing--urgent like most 80's prog. 82
George Clanton & Nick Hexum
"Unclassifiable" is one of my favorite genres, and this one fits in quite well. I appreciate that they kept the song under 5 minutes--it would have been easy to let things meander, and they avoided the temptation. 90
Anderson East
More eclectic than unclassifiable. I like their sources, and they blend them well--still, I'd rather listen to the originals. 86
The Steppas
I'm really out of my comfort zone here, but this group is both comforting and joyful. If I'm not mistaken, their guitarist has been listening to some classic British prog. 91
The reigning monarch: XTC by a hair, with the Steppas next in line for the throne.
