The Malebolge (literally "evil pockets" or "evil ditches") is the 8th circle of Dante's Inferno--simple fraud (which is distinguished from complex fraud in the 9th circle).

Contrary to what most people think, Dante had a wonderful sense of humor (and was fascinated by word play). I think he would have been flattered to have an arcane programming language alluding to his masterwork.
