I'm afraid this is a bit like telling an alcoholic that orange juice is an alternative to vodka. It's not as though we're sitting at a restaurant with two choices on the menu. We have come too far (and I'm not equating this present state with progress) to replace our conveniences and technologies with simpler ways of living (e.g. communes or co-ops), regardless of how much more humane those simpler strategies may be.

It's a full-time job to forestall the excesses of modern capitalism, but that task is more life-sustaining than advocating for a change that will never happen (short of a cataclysmic war / natural disaster, as in Twelve Monkeys).
