I'm a constituent of Marjorie Taylor Greene. I've lived in this particular county for over 35 years. I've lived in Georgia all but the first two of my 70 years.
From my observation, the people here did not go bonkers after 2016. If there's a cognitive or ethical flaw in the average person "not of color" here (and I'm not saying there isn't), it goes back farther than the Civil War. Nixon's "Southern Strategy" didn't cause the problem; it simply exploited it.
There are, as I see it, two possible strategies to overcome these cognitive / ethical flaws:
1. Persuade people who cling to unenlightened viewpoints that they should upgrade their operating systems.
2. Support the people who have traditionally been victimized by the unenlightened (aka bigoted) and hope that the power of a democratic republic will eventually overcome prejudice and bigotry.
I'm afraid the first strategy isn't going to work. We've gotten rid of a statue or two, but the impetus behind the erection of these monuments is as strong as ever.
The bigots here have had over 150 years to come to terms with their self-imposed limitations. If your neighbor's dog has been trained to bite anyone except your neighbor, reaching your hand out in friendship is only going to get you bitten.
