If you took three sheets of paper and on the first sheet listed the candidates from parties X and Y in terms of how the policies (if implemented) would benefit the country as a whole; and the second sheet listed the ways that each candidate / party would benefit the voter personally; and the third sheet listed the similarities and differences between what the voter believes in and the values that the candidate promotes (or claims to promote), then practically everyone voting Republican would choose the candidate / party they thought was most like themselves (sheet 3); practically all Democrats and Independents would select either the candidate / party who would benefit the country as a whole or who would benefit themselves personally.

Democratic / independent voters tend to be either altruistic (sheet 1) or rational (sheet 2). Republican voters are essentially tribal and irrational.

Unfortunately in the 2022 election, it may be that tribalists are more motivated to vote than are altruists or rationalists. If that's the case, heaven help us.
