If you look at pop culture as the cultural values and awareness of average people, then (in my view) if you removed the Marx Brothers and their subsequent influence from the world that they lived in and that followed them, then the popular world today would be more different than if you removed any single musician (e.g. Duke Ellington or the Beatles or Jimi Hendrix). If we didn't have the Beatles, we'd have the Rolling Stones or the Kinks, etc. If we didn't have the Marx Brothers we'd have who? We wouldn't even have the 3 Stooges, let alone the current crop of comedians whose absurdist humor we take for granted.

The fact that young people today aren't aware of the web that goes back to the Marx Brothers doesn't mean that these young people weren't profoundly affected by Groucho et al., just that they don't have a sense of history.
