If you asked Jains if their veganism was separable from their religion, you’d probably get a blank stare (I don’t know any Jains to ask — this is just a guess). There’s no reason to separate veganism from ___ kind of faith, but there’s no reason to expect anyone who follows the values of veganism to subscribe to a particular kind of religious belief. It’s like asking if golf is a religion (in Japan it can be, sort of).
As for vegan evangelism, i.e. spreading the gospel of vegan(ism), I tend to be Quakerish. Just as the Society of Friends believes that God is in all of us, I believe everyone (religious or not) has within them the desire to be kind.
Some people fight against the desire; some people try to ignore it; some people try their best to discover how to be kind.
Everyone is on the same journey toward kindness, but everyone’s journey is unique.
Everybody is on a path to veganism. Different people have different paces.
In my opinion, the best way to promote veganism is not to condemn the eating of meat / dairy etc., but to live as kind a life as possible. Your example will have more impact than your words.
Pushy vegans have probably done more to encourage eating meat than has Hormel.
