If the audience ever stops thinking this, the story is in deep trouble. Even when the story starts with the conclusion, the audience must wonder throughout the remainder of the plot "How did the protagonist get to this point?" or "Why did the protagonist make the choices that led to this?" And thus the audience must still wait to the final scenes to understand the nature or meaning of the metamorphosis.
