I’d like to suggest another pass (which would fall between 1 and 2): to read your personal response analytically, breaking the story down into a series of emotions that you feel. The trick is to “watch” or note how you change internally as you navigate through the pages. Since each scene engenders (or should engender) at least one strong emotion, the itinerary will probably reflect the divisions of the scene breakdown. But it’s important not to confuse your internal responses with the emotions of the characters on the page.
