I think with a writer like David Lynch (and I'm embarassed to say I've never read one of his scripts), the distinctive creativity arises from what's BETWEEN any two cards (how Lynch jumps from one bit of conflict to the next). It's not that he's an absurdist (Charlie Kaufman or the Coens are much more absurdist than Lynch is), it's that he believes that there's a logic that underlies the apparently random jumps within his story structure, and that most of the time we're not aware of how this logic works in our lives.
