I think we've become lazy readers, and malcolms reinforce our laziness (maybe they don't cause laziness, but the relationship is clearly one of co-dependency). Thinking back to the popular non-fiction books of my youth, I remember a powerful concrete example in R. D. Laing's "The Politics of Experience." But that example was inserted into the argument that Laing had already established. It wasn't a teaser to the audience.
To eschew malcolms is to trust your readers and yourself as a writer.
