I think "unsophisticated" is a false standard. Maybe Katy Perry is less sophisticated than Billie Eilish, but by most standards the typical Woody Guthrie song is less sophisticated than the typical Katy Perry song. Neither "unsophisticated” nor “simple” is the same thing as "superficial."
In my opinion, it's legitimate to ask if a musician is genuine or phony (even though taste will inevitably influence one's answer).
I'm not very familiar with EDM and its various subgenres, but that particular Martin Garrix track didn't come across as heartfelt (a strange adjective to use for EDM, but some of it that I've heard is moving).
I AM wary of performers who are extremely popular in the short run (one BILLION views?), because time often shows that the big hits of yesterday were more often hype-driven fads than innovations.
The most productive response is to enjoy whatever you like without feeling guilty. But I worry that overhyped wonders are edging out innovators before they can become classics. as well as diverting attention and revenue from great artists from the past.
